lento procedere prima del sonno reviews

It’s been quite a few years since Tryfar (Asofy‘s composer) made ‘ebYm’. But now he’s back with a new EP. Undeniably there has been a lot of progress since ‘ebYm’, and while I really liked his debut, it wasn’t one of those releases that I keep on returning to. The reason is it’s tortured sound. It really fascinated me, but it’s not a release which one can relax to and just enjoy. ‘Lento procedere prima del sonno’ is different. It’s got the same bleakness and angst as it’s predecessor, but it has been combined with a vast atmosphere which slightly eludes an explanation on my part. It’s both in the vein of Dolorian‘s self-titled album as well as The 3rd and the Mortal‘s ‘Tears Laid in Earth’. Truly one of the most haunting and utterly nihilistic doom/black experiences to date.
‘Lento procedere prima del sonno’ is Italian and can be translated to something like “slow procession towards sleep”. When you take the music into account I’d claim that this refers to death in some way, perhaps even to suicide. The track titles seems to give some hints about this. The EP is split into two, with track one through three being the first part and the fourth track being the second part. Part one starts with ‘esterno’, which means “outside”. I suspect that this is related to the beginning state, where life is easy. If I’m correct then the second track, ‘interno’ (“inside), would be the gradual decline. This is the point where you grow inwards, starting a seclusion from the social world which peeks in track three. ‘percorso’, translated as “covered”, is the end point of part one. You’re shut off from the world and thus remain alone. Such a gradual decline into utter depression would leave little doubt on what the second part, ‘infinito’ (“infinity”), refers to… There is however other possible explanations, one of which is that this is a nihilistic tale of life from birth to death. Whichever is right, it’s needless to say that this EP has the ability to capture my imagination!
I’ve got lots of praises for this EP. Personally I’d say that this is despondent enough to satisfy Nortt fans, tortured enough to satisfy fans of early Katatonia, atmospheric enough to appeal to more extreme fans of Dolorian or The 3rd and the Mortal, and generally good enough to be appreciated by most who enjoy doom/black. Perhaps I am overly confident, but I’ll still mark this as ‘highly recommended’. (Arnstein H. Pettersen)

The disc starts smoothly: delicate and deconstructed music, sparkling cymbals and light drums, atonal droning bass in the background, clear arpeggios… and a suffocating agonizing voice of a desperate man certainly suffering from an incurable disease. Strange and unsettling is the Doom that Asofy composes. It’s Post-Rockish, laid back, a bit lethargic and dark, gloomy and a bit frightening as well. The textures are original. Mostly instrumental, the album can come across as a ‘what if?’ exercise: What if we stretch, throughout a whole album, the same disincarnated mood, warm and bleak, dreamy, cottony and dark at the same time? That’s the bet Asofy has taken. It works for me; it won’t for others: there are no momentums, no blasts, no or little rhythmic changes in fact. The flow can accelerate a bit, the pace happens to become more thunderous, but it won’t last. Asofy’s musical world roams a metaphysical desert where the thoughts collide in slow motion, bogged down in apathy. That’s a nice try. Taking into account the awesome packaging – as usual with Trazerouno, I can only recommend you this album as a treat. (Bertrand Marchal)

(Thiess)

Superficially black metal and funeral doom don’t appear to have much in common. One is based on thin guitars, non-existent bass and (oftentimes) subpar production: the other relies on thick guitars, rumbling bass and massive heaviness. One rips along at the speed of an angry devil, full of hell: the other languishes in mortuary darkness, full of despair. One is face paint and fire breathing: the other is hooded robes and suicidal tears. The closest black metal usually comes to funeral doom is some of the depressive black metal bands, but even the slowest of those never quite conjure the same atmosphere of brooding moroseness that has been funeral doom’s stock in trade for the last fifteen years; and modern funeral doom bands don’t generally seem taken with black metal in any substantial sense. But a hard delineation between the two genres wasn’t always the case. Because while Thergothon came more or less from a death metal background, another forebear of funeral doom, Skepticism, came from the black metal scene; and until I heard the term funeral doom a few years ago I had always considered Skepticism a black metal band. Which brings me then to Asofy, a one man blackened funeral doom (funereal black metal?) band from Italy. Lento Procedere Prima del Sonno is a four song EP released in November of 2007 by Trazeroeuno; sole member Tryfar, while adhering to some of the tenets of one man black metal, has wisely eschewed most of them. Too many of those “bands” substitute unchanging and formless guitar buzz for actual riffs and seem able to program only the simplest beats into their drum machines, all the while treating “variation” as an unutterable heresy. The guitars on Lento Procedere… are mostly cleaner and minimally distorted except during the few up tempo sections and the drums are not programmed into one useless raging blastbeat or the basic Darkthrone punk beat for the entire EP. He also avoids the bedroom black metal trap (I’m referring to the hordes of musically untalented hacks that populate the Internet and have made Myspace the space for illiterate suburban Satanism) by focusing on the music and presentation more than image and style. What’s equally heartening for a one man black metal band is the subdued vocal performance from Tryfar; while he has an unearthly croak it’s not the focus of these songs. Too many newer black metal bands seem to write the lyrics first and the music comes as an afterthought if it’s thought of at all so that the words and the vocals become of primary importance and an over-the-top performance is a necessity (a perfect example is the trash that is Striborg). Most of these four long songs are free of vocals. His croak seems to my ears more similar to the pained howls of extreme doom or sludge than to the reptilian rasp of black metal (his vocals remind me a lot of Creston Spiers’ “singing” with Harvey Milk). By avoiding the worst tendencies of both bedroom black metal and one man black metal bands, Asofy is free to explore other musical possibilities that are almost anathema to the above mentioned styles. In some ways this EP hews close to the gods of funeral doom: neither the clean, plucked opening notes of “Eterno” or the middle third of “Percorso” would be out of place on an Until Death Overtakes Me or Esoteric album: the tempo too is quite slow through most of the album, only seldom approaching more than a crawling canter, fitting close to the pace Skepticism set years ago. This also has what I like to call the “sterile” heaviness of funeral doom, lacking the grime, feedback and noisiness of extreme doom and sludge bands like Moss, Buried At Sea, Monarch! and the like; while it’s certainly heavy, it’s more of an atmospheric or psychical heaviness than ground shaking, temblor heaviness. Along with exploring the near reaches of funeral doom, I hear a bit of the shoe gazer black metal that’s been lately popularized by Alcest, and Amesoeurs; while I think Asofy is heavier and more doomy than those bands, certain riffs and song structures have a shoe gazer feel to them in that their not nearly as aggressive as standard black metal. There are also shades of post rock to be heard in a few passages of Lento Procedere…, especially the end of “Percorso” and the last few minutes of “Infinito”; but if that is worrisome to “kvlt” members it must be remembered: this is post rock played through a funeral doom, black metal filter so it’s much more ominous and decidedly more metal than your average second rate Isis clone covering Do Make Say Think or hipster discovering Burzum for the first time. Asofy is on to something with Lento Procedere…; it may not be groundbreaking black metal or the next big thing in funeral doom, but for those of us who have had enough depressive black metal to last ten unipolar episodes, enough “trve” black metal for at least a thousand virgin sacrifices and enough trundling funeral doom for a dozen suicides, this is a welcome change. By combining genres with competing but complimentary aesthetics and sounds, Asofy has created an album that remains interesting on repeated listening. While this may not be black enough for the corpse painted legions or heavy enough for funeral doom fanatics, I think it splits the difference nicely. Add to that the great packaging from Trazereuno, and if you’re willing to step outside strict genre confines, this is a pleasant surprise for open minded black metal and funeral doom fans. The utter calm beginning can be misleading. The clean, beautiful guitar stretches, the all-over cymbals games, it takes us to another place, maybe some temple, perhaps some all-green valley. In the very moment when the agonized shattered screams of band’s mastermind Tryfar enter the scene, one understand this is the very opposite of that calmness before the storm, for this is a work of all things negative in the human soul. In the opening song, Tryfar advices us to hide before shedding down your skin-mask. But even when the shield is beyond the vulnerable body, the music still flows as if on its own stream of consciousness, without any rules. This stream composed of depressive / suicidal black metal pillars, funeral doom layers, shoegazing winds, jazz rhythms and drone sights. Most of the songs are consisted of large instrumental parts, whereas the tortured vocals fly down below the music, as if Tryfar was crying for help from the bottom of a well, or, hell. The vocals are sung in the veins of Abruptum, and are genuine as an artistic emission of what gathered deep down. But Asofy is more delicate, what enables him to conquer more untouched spheres. Though he screams, he is drive from the power of silence, hence the sound, which is given by the using of more soft instruments, such as the clean strings, which are a vital part of the atmosphere. In these manners, it is clear that the melancholy exhaled by Asofy is rooted deeply in the depressive black metal turf; though evolve more than the basics, as mentioned, which is the most important achievement of this album. The depressive black metal scene is alive than ever, with more new releases coming out than any other black spheres, but only a handful of the bands dare to showcase an advanced attitude that emerge out of that sub-genre, usually with the kind help of glimpses from other styles. Those elements enriches the cauldron and present panoramic map of the soul, not always dark and can hide a few tips of positive vibes. This is, by no means, an average generic release: It is one of the most unique developments of this closed sub-genre, due to the clever using of delicate sound and neighboring and far alike genres. The integration of progressive elements such as the jazz and the drone along with the traditional near-spheres like the doom and the raw black metal flashes, is what makes this a comet in the dark skies of the scene, and maybe, throughout the general black scene. The album might represent a new generation of the depressive knights, who knows no generic boundaries when it comes to vomiting their souls out and rides for unknown destinations. Asofy does it in four songs only, and the vast and unexplored lands that lies to his feet as a result, assures me the anxious waiting for his next effort. (Jobst)

Possibly the most annoying thing in reviewing underground bands is that sometimes you poke into some really interesting records which are ruined with very poor production. While listening to these kind of records, you just can’t help but think that if the artist would have took the production aspect seriously, the record would’ve been great. Lento Procedere Prima Del Sonno has definitely some great compositions in it and arrangements are well made. Songs are long and progressive nicely from one mood to another. Even the poor guitar playing brings some ominous atmosphere. But the whole EP is ruined with really bad production. Why would anyone want to pan the snare drum to the right and bass drum to the left? Those machine drums also sound lifeless and in this sort of doom metal the drum groove is essential. And the guitar sound don’t fit the mood at all! It’s also worth of mentioning that all the lyrics are in Italy. Lento Procedere Prima Del Sonno introduces a talented doom metallist, who instead of producing, unproduced his record. I would recommend this EP only for drum-machine maniacs (if there are any). Let’s hope that Tryfar, the mastermind behind Asofy, will next time have a real drummer accompanying his brutal, yet emotional doom metal. (Achromaticus)

(Aceust)

Slow (but not quite doom slow), melodic, and fairly atmospheric passages with sporadic black metal parts. And the BM parts aren’t all blown out and faste either. Lots of floaty, kinda high guitar notes but they let some fuzz layer over it at some points. The drums are very clear in the mix. Vocals are pretty low in the mix, and the fact that it’s a doom styled rasp, it makes it a bit harder to detect, but they occasionally become anguished and tortured enough to show through. This CDr is good, but not something l’d listen to often. It’s just too melodic and pretty for my tastes when it comes to the slow. The packaging is a sweet gatefold on a stick cardstock w/ lyrics inside and way cool flaps that hold but don’t cover the CDr. Only package complaint would be the font color, which makes it damn near impossible to read most of the stuff on it.

(Sathorius)

Avevamo già, in passato, avuto modo di parlare bene di questa one man band milanese, in occasione di “ebYm”, primo cdr targato Asofy. Da quella uscita, sono passati diversi anni e com’è naturale, anche lo stile di Asofy si è evoluto. Siamo di fronte ad una band maturata e votata sempre all’innovazione, con uno stile personale. “Lento Procedere Prima del Sonno” è un viaggio individuale nei meandri dell’essere, una musica profondamente intimista, non adatta ad un ascolto corale. Fin dal titolo del disco si intuisce che il sonno viene qui visto come un traguardo, se vogliamo una soluzione contro una vita “spietata”. La centralità della musica di Asofy è sempre l’atmosfera, come una ideale colonna sonora, di emozioni ed istanti della vita, di una vita che procede lenta, prima del raggiungimento del sonno, eterno. Se dovessi definire lo stile di questo cdr professionale direi “Ambient black metal”, perché in questa musica coesistono queste due anime, tramite suoni meccanici, ossessivi; riff di chitarra malsani e distorti; una voce nascosta, ma che quando emerge trasmette il suo interiore grido d’angoscia. Questo disco è estremamente freddo e alluncinato, con episodi lunghi e fatti di strutture essenziali. Asofy si tratta di una delle poche realtà che affronta in modo così impegnato le vie della sperimentazione pura, senza paura di essere fuori dal coro, senza paura di proporre qualcosa di realmente innovativo. In Italia sicuramente, di band così, ce ne sono pochissime e Asofy sono fra i migliori interpreti dell’avanguardia sonora nel contesto black metal. Asofy dimostra di essere pronto, dalla giusta maturità per fare il salto di qualità. Le etichette specializzate dovrebbero fare a pugni per accaparrarsi questo talentuoso progetto. {Mirror}

Grey and liquid are the first two words come to my mind during the listening of Asofy’s music. After a beginning with a dark mood (the guitar arpeggio has reminded me The Cure) the distorted and repetitive riffs ripple the grey water. It’s like to be suspended in a limbo, a catatonic state without exit. The ghost-like voice is a painful whisper. Music for your solitude. The clean production is broken sometimes by the distorted guitar and some impulsive, nervous percussions but, electricity and distortion aren’t the weapons of Asofy! The only limit is that you have to be in the right state to appreciate this kind of music so if you listen to this CD after smoking something hard and drinking a bottle of red wine you’ll make a wonderful trip for sure. Ican’t avoid to spend some words for the artwork and the packaging made by trazeroeuno, simply wonderful and original!

Geniale. (VikingBlood)

Asofy is an Italian one man band, formed in 2000 only by an obscure figure called Tryfar and “Lento Procedere Prima Del Sonno” is the band second release and follow-up of their debut work called “ebYm”, also released by Trazeroeuno several years ago… Deep, eclectic and highly Atmospheric Black/Doom Metal is what Asofy delivers here; an intense blend of Doom Metal tempos, Black Metal buzzing guitars, evil vocals, disturbing melodies and wicked atmospheres… The four tracks this work contains are unique pieces of intelligently composed music; the disturbingly serene melodies are mixed with obscure and evil metallic passages, where the infernal vocalizations of Tryfar are complemented by a hypnotic and obscure (yet strangely beautiful) musicianship. The guitar driven atmospheres are definitely the leading element, contributing enormously with the whole album intensity and profundity… “Lento Procedere Prima Del Sonno” is a highly entrancing work, even when barely exceeds the 30 minutes, each song seems to be carefully created to drive you into a deep catatonic trance… which also becomes completely addictive after a couple of listenings… Despite of being the band’s second work, this album shows an incredible musical maturity, making me think about an original mix between Dolorian and Ulver… Are you getting the picture? The whole album presentation is top-notch; with a sort of digipack-like slim package and a pro-printed Cd-r, as an interesting sample of the band and label’s professionalism and commitment… The album’s production is also flawless, every element of this magnetic opus is completely and clearly hearable, allowing you to get immerse into this hallucinating black trance… I’m definitely impressed by “Lento Procedere Prima Del Sonno”; this is unquestionably a high level work… This album is not only recommendable for those into the atmospheric side of Black or Doom Metal, this work is definitely recommendable for anyone who enjoys the intelligent, yet simple compositions with high doses of obscurity and originality… Killer work!! Doom on… (Asmodeo)

Without any question one of the most interesting metal releases that came in for this fourth issue was Asofy’s “Lento procedere Prima del Sonno”. Coming from Italy (Milan, to be precise) and the creation of just one person, Tryfar, Asofy tread some sort of hitherto unknown territory with this album that is a bit tricky to define, to say the very least. Roughly speaking, parts black metal, doom metal, dark wave and even jazz, Asofy are like some sort of mutant hybrid, a creature that grew in the dark, spontaneously, far off in some humid corner shielded away from the primary zones of action and debate, and in the outcome have established for themselves a decidedly unique voice in the dark. It is not easy to even begin describing it, as I have already said, but perhaps the defining feature of the band is the unusual, liquid-like ambience of the production, abetted by a clean, gentle guitar awash in reverb, soaked in celestial waters, so to speak. The tempo is slow and laid back, indolent almost, with just a few deviations in the case of some unconventional, almost schizophrenic drum patterns during the heavier parts of the record. The drums, speaking of which, are quite obviously the work of a computer, but a creative work they are, with ample sparse percussive use, to be specific. Cymbals, for example, shake and tatter wildly as a guitar that sounds like it was recorded at the bottom of a lake plays some somber, wretched melodies a la Canaan, creating an intense, dreamy mood. These sparse guitar movements are, I think, the best parts of “Lento procedere prima…”, producing visions of shimmering stars (celestial waters) splashing calmly along some extraterrestrial shore, while the fuzzed out guitars produce waves of radiation shot out and dispersed from its nearest star, a boiling red giant. The vocals tend toward something like dying moans or subdued whispers, and are used infrequently throughout that album, adding to the sense of sparsity and open space, as well as mystery. All four tracks bring eclectic moods, offering downward swings and lazy upsurges to mind, and yet cohere as a whole. I suppose the only negative to the recording is that there aren’t enough neat clean guitar parts, and that the CD is fairly short, leaving in me a feeling of something only half finished. Usually I don’t care so much for length but in this case the shortness of the recording is a shortcoming in itself, which I think can be construed as a positive criticism. Like Cervix, also on the same label, the CD-R comes in a stylized flat 3-panel cardboard sleeve, with an interesting 2-sided cutout in the panel holding the CD, and some pretty photos of roots and other obscure visions. It’s definitely a nice presentation, and felicitous to the musical content found within. (Yury Arkadin)

Enthusiasm for Black Metal from Italy was a legitimate thing to do lately, one just has to think of all this crushing stuff that came from the direction of the – on these sides honoured – ATMF label or various other chapels that are spread across many other labels. One could almost be of the opinion that all at once, every single ambitious band got a grip on themselves and burn down the market with nothing but quality. Well, and then came Asofy into my world that – despite their relatively long existence – obviously don’t want to participate in this absolutely support deserving change. The problems of Asofy are built up on many levels, I want to begin with the most obvious one: The limited musical abilities of sole member Tryfar. His playing sounds extremely fragile, as if this guy has to gnaw on the fact that he is actually recording such garbage right now. Surely, some fulltime optimists may hear a cross-grained mixture of Black Metal and overlong acoustic tomfoolery in this piteous attempts to create something profound like atmosphere… which has been conglutinated in an atrocious way. Without a noticeable sense or intention, all the put-to-tone pad sketches alternate with each other – here a fade-in, there a fade-out and somewhere else a somehow squeezed-in synthesizer background. Of course does the man behind this all not get away without any moments in which he exceptionally plays some really nice ideas but the hope on a possible improvement abates at least as quickly as it elusively came up; hence unutterably paralyzing are the cacophonic events here that both tire and let the fingers shy towards the stop-button, let apart the emeticly bad moaning… There are only two possible exit strategies in order to turn away the debacle for Asofy: Either he puts his project to rest or really, really starts working heavily on his development. It’s a pity for the blank CDs which are doomed to be responsible for this! (Amikkus)

(Luca FIlisetti)
